} Day 12: Reversible Purse

I LOVE this pattern from A Very Purple Person! It’s very easy and doesn’t take a lot of time or material, so it’s the perfect beginner project, and is great for gifting! Here is the original tutorial!

Final Bag dimensions (approximate): reversible purse

  • from top of straps to bottom of bag: 50 cm / 20 inches
  • height: 28 cm / 11 inches
  • width: 40 cm / 16 inches

Fabric needed:

½ yard of two prints (lie the fabric flat, then fold the selvage edges toward the center for two folded edges to cut along)

1. Cut 4 pieces of fabrics, 2 of each print (Print A and Print B). You can do cornered or rounded edges. The original tutorial and pattern have rounded, but I like a squared edge, so I altered the pattern when cutting to square up the edge.

*Note: If you want to add pockets, sew them before going to the next step.

2. Sew the bottom and sides of each print.

For square edges, cut a 1 – 1 ½” square (depending on the size you want) out of the corners of all 4 pieces (you can stack them up, careful to line up the pieces exactly, and cut the two corners of all at once!). Sew the bottom seam and both sides, but NOT around the square you just cut! Next, fold the bottom seam to align with the side seam to create your perpendicular seam; pin to secure and sew! (Repeat for both corners of both prints—sew 4 corners in total!)

For rounded edges, sew the darts before sewing the bottom and sides of bag. Clip around the curved seams.

3. Put print B into print A, right sides together, and sew around the straps, leaving at least two inches of the straps unsewn for the next step. Baskstitch to secure the strap seams so far.

4. Clip around the new curved seams at the base(s) of the straps.

5. Turn the right sides out through one of the straps. (This part is a bit tedious and tricky, but once the bulk of the bag is in the strap, the rest will put out quickly and easily!)

6. Pull each of the remaining straps right-sides out.

7. Sew the ends of the straps of each set together. Make sure that you sew each strap to the strap beside it, NOT the strap that is in front of it!

8. Press the seams open. Fold seam allowances on straps (use the existing seams as your guide!) and press. Also press edges of bag to make it easier for topstitching.

9. Match the tops seams together and pin all open edges of straps.

10. Topstitch all edges of bag.
